Pensions Poll – Daily Star, Telegraph vote “yes”

Readers of the anti-union Daily Star newspaper have overwhelmingly backed UNISON‘s planned strike on the 30th of November against the government’s proposed attack on public sector pensions.

UnionNews has learned that the so-far unpublished poll shows 82% of readers support the strike, with just 17% voting against.

UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis said: “The poll shows that despite government propaganda and myths about gold plated pensions, the public are fair minded and believe people should be treated fairly.

“We cannot have a race to the bottom over pensions and we will continue to fight for decent pensions for all workers – public and private.”

Daily Star readers proved to be considerably more pro-union than their historically left-of-centre Guardian counterparts. A mere 77% of Guardian voters said the union is right to call a strike.

At the time of writing, the third newspaper poll launched in the wake of the UNISON ballot – by the Conservative-supporting Daily Telegraph – shows 84.11% of readers in favour of the strike with 15.9% against.
